Medical Retina

Medical Retina is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that focuses on the diagnosis and non-surgical management of diseases affecting the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye), macula, and vitreous.

It deals mainly with medical treatment (injections, lasers, systemic control), as opposed to surgical retina which handles procedures like vitrectomy.

Common Conditions Managed in Medical Retina

  1. 1. Diabetic Retinopathy
    • Most common retinal disease in India
    • Includes diabetic macular edema (DME)
    • Managed with anti-VEGF injections, laser, metabolic control
  2. 2. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
    • Dry AMD
    • Wet AMD (requires intravitreal injections)
  3. 3. Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO)
    • Branch retinal vein occlusion
    • Central retinal vein occlusion
  4. 4. Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSCR)
  5. 5. Hypertensive Retinopathy
  6. 6. Uveitis (Posterior / Intermediate)
  7. 7. Macular Disorders
    • Macular edema
    • Epiretinal membrane (non-surgical cases)
    • Macular telangiectasia

Diagnostic Tools Used

  • Fundus photography
  • OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
  • FFA (Fundus Fluorescein Angiography)
  • OCT-A
  • B-scan ultrasonography

💉 Common Treatments in Medical Retina

  • Intravitreal Anti-VEGF injections (Ranibizumab, Aflibercept, Bevacizumab)
  • Steroid injections/implants
  • Laser photocoagulation
  • Systemic disease management (diabetes, hypertension)

🩺 Difference Between Medical & Surgical Retina

Medical Retina Surgical Retina
Non-surgical management Operative procedures
Injections, laser Vitrectomy
Macular edema, AMD Retinal detachment
Diabetic retinopathy Complex vitreoretinal disorders

If you would like, I can:

  • Create clinic-ready patient education material
  • Design a medical retina OPD template
  • Make a retina awareness brochure
  • Or prepare exam-oriented notes (PG level)
